Friends of dance in the Montgomery area,

Our local dance community is saddened by the sudden death of Edmond, who died just after a swing dance at 301 Club about 9:15 last Friday night.
He was in the midst of people celebrating life and the joy of movement, where he has been a regular ballroom dancer for years.
Few of us have the honor of dying in a church, very few indeed, and we will no doubt remember him the rest of our own lives in this realm.
Lift up your hearts and spirits in special prayer for his family and friends, especially Danielle, his close friend and partner on the dance floor last week.
This was in the Advertiser Sunday:
KELLEY, Edmond Henry, Jr., 64, a resident of Deatsville died March 6, 2009. Graveside services will be Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Carville Cemetery with Reverend Charles Wise officiating. Mr. Kelley was a retired Lieutenant with the Montgomery Fire Department and a member of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church. He is preceded in death by his son Ronald Kelley, parents Edmond and Monteze Kelley and a brother Charles Kelley. Survivors include daughter Deborah Ward, brother James Harold Kelley, granddaughter Monica Clay and two great grandchildren Aaliyah Rapier and Tyler Clay. Pallbearers will be Troy Aadson and the Montgomery Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Frazer United Methodist Church. Leak-Memory Chapel Directing.
Blessings and peace in contemplation of that which is most sacred and solemn

New Year for new moves

The 301 Club at Dexter Avenue offers one of the best values for ballroom lessons in town. Come check out our Latin style Rumba classes in January and the even slower Foxy in February. Steve will inspire you and you'll want to stay for the practice time-open dance after 7:45

Christmas Parade on Dec 5th

police department traffic changes for the Christmas parade will go like this:
1. block off Monroe Street behind the church before 6:00 PM, so you cannot come off Madison Avenue and circle around to any of the parking lots that way.
2. will not block off any crossing streets of Dexter Avenue until 6:00 PM, but after that you will not be able with a car to cross Dexter Avenue until the parade is over.
3. Christmas parade goers will be in the area early and will fill the parking lots around the church before 6:00 PM, except for the back church parking lot because Calvin and I will no let them in there.
4. I plan to be at the church before 5:15 PM and anyone who wants to take the dance lesson should be in the area looking for a parking place not later than shortly after 5:30 PM.
5. The Christmas parade usually last just shortly over an hour and then one by one the police will start opening up the crossing streets of Dexter Avenue and patrons will be able to park and get into 301 Club before the dance begins.
I guess it comes down to either come about an hour early than usual or wait until around 7:30 PM before you come. Hope this helps! ~ Ken

Our beloved instructor Kelly Dubose died

This dance community was shocked and saddened to learn of Kelly's hospitalization one Friday. His subsequent death due to complications of diabetes is a loss we still struggle to accept.

Dancing helps Parkinson's Patients

This looks like a special extra reason for 301 Club ministries to not only exist, but thrive and diversify for health and healing reasons - besides the obvious God-given spiritual blessings. Thanks to Steve Petrik for sharing this clip so we could post it.

YouTube video of Cha Cha Paseo lesson by our own Kelly Dubose

David Martin filmed this short lesson of Cha Cha Paseo at 301 Club. Steve Petrik encouraged me to post the link on this blog. Steve says,
"The video that David made of Paula & Kelly doing the Cha Cha came out great. It is sure a nice way to be able to review some of the steps that Kelly is teaching us. Has any consideration been given to making some videos like this for future lessons and having them available for review? I think it would go a long way in helping to remember some of the lessons that Kelly is teaching us. It is just a thought......"

Mambo Lesson Begin Friday night, February 29, 2008

To All 301 Club Patrons,

Just a reminder that Kelly will be teaching the first Mambo class on February 29, 2008 and will teach Mambo each Friday night next month, except Friday night, March 21, 2008 when we will be closed for Good Friday.

Mambo is a fun latin rhythm dance that I know all who come and participate in the dance lessons will learn basic Mambo patterns and further enhance their knowledge of ballroom dances.

Make your plans to be at 301 Club for another evening of fun, dancing and fellowship.

Valentine's Dance

The second Friday in February was a special dance for Valentine's; many ladies in red and their beaus came for the Foxy lesson by Kelly. A table loaded with tasty treats was tempting to the nearly 100 dancers attending on Feb 8. The next special dance is in mid-March.

070429 Thanksgiving in Spring with 301 Club

Take off in a new direction for how we dance in celebration of the “LORD OF THE DANCE” Jesus Christ.

There is no script or written record to this recording. However, by clicking on the title to this article with a current free iTunes or free Quicktime downloaded and installed in your computer, you can listen to the entire coverdish celebration in the 301 club/fellowship hall on Sunday afternoon April 29, 2007. It is a brilliant reflection of the history of 301 Club and the rejuvenating participation of many in the Dexter Avenue community who are maintaining the best possible reflection of the presence of Jesus Christ in our midst in downtown Montgomery, Alabama.

The first speaker is Margarie Dunbar with comments from Gwen Pearson - two of the early supporters of the 301 dance club. Then Bill Pearson speaks of the Thanksgiving in Springtime theme. Several others give their understanding of what and how we celebrate the rebuilding of the kitchen at Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church with those who helped in this ministry of resurrection.

301 club party night

JUNE 22- CRUISE PARTY

Please remember if you desire to bring food, snacks, etc. for our party nigHT!

301 notes - spring quarter 2007
_____________________________________________________
MY FELLOW 301 PATRONS, Daylight Savings Time has arrived ahead of spring this year and I hope each of you will be able to keep time to the dances of Cha Cha, Mambo and Waltz which Kelly will be teaching during the months of April, May and June respectively. We will have eleven Friday nights dancing together this quarter with us taking off the Friday nights of April 06 for Good Friday and May 25 for Jubilee. Also, we will have one party night on June 22 which will be our annual “Cruise Party.” So, make your plans to be with us each Friday night that you are able and as always I encourage each of you to bring someone new to the Christian fellowship of “301 Club.”

Bob Adams, Artist and Evangelist
BOB ADAMS has been a familiar sight on the streets of downtown Montgomery since 1982. He can be found on a street corner with his easel (or just a huge sheet of masonite) creating a vivid visual interpretation of an Old or New Testament Bible passage on almost any sunny day. Many of his inspiring images are now on exhibit on the lower floor of Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church, at the corner of Dexter Avenue and McDonough Street. Some of the paintings now on exhibit at the church have been seen previously in store windows downtown where they have now been replaced by newer paintings.

BOB graduated from one of the nation’s premier art schools, New York City’s Pratt Institute, in 1978. He painted for a few years in the Las Vegas area, making ends meet by working in the casinos. Soon after that, the thought came to him that if he began painting Bible stories instead of cityscapes, when someone asked him what he was doing, he could quite naturally relate the truth that Jesus loves us, He died on the cross for our sins, He arose from the dead and anyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.

THE PUBLIC, and especially Bob’s friends from The 301 Club, are invited to a special showing of the paintings on Sunday, March 18th from 3:00 ‘til 5:00 P.M. Light refreshments will be served. Bob will be present to explain the paintings; visitors are invited to bring a Bible with them to use as a reference to each painting. Admission is free, but contributions will be accepted.

IN ADDITION to the Art Exhibit and Reception, the first of a planned series of “Young Artist Recitals” will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. The featured performer for this Recital will be Eric Jo, a 19 year old Korean native who is now studying piano with Huntingdon Professor Ronald Shinn. Eric has taken first place in several competitions. For this Recital he will play compositions by Chopin, Bach, Beethoven and Prokofiev.
Admission to the “Young Artist Recitals” is free.

AS ALWAYS, thank you for your continuing support of “301 Club!”

301 Notes for WINTER QUARTER 2007 - by Ken Stafford -

MY FELLOW 301 PATRONS, I hope everyone had a joyous and wonderful Christmas season, and now that the gifts have been given and the parties have been attended, it is time to return to 301 Club to begin another year of dance instruction, dancing and fellowship. Your continued support of 301 Club is greatly appreciated, and I hope everyone is anxious to learn as much as they can about dancing in 2007 and to become a more graceful and elegant dancer.

We begin this year with Kelly teaching the beautiful and graceful dance of Waltz, followed in February by the slow and romantic dance, the Foxy, and ending the quarter in March with one of the favorite latin dances, the Rhumba.
I know Kelly will do his usual great job of instructing you in these three beautiful dances, so, make your plans to be at 301 Club each Friday night this quarter, and bring a friend, and introduce them to the wonderful art form of dance and to our 301 Club ministry.

There will be two parties this quarter, so, please mark your calendars so you will not miss out on the fun. We will have a Valentine Party on February 09 and a St. Patrick’s Day Party on March 16. As always we ask you to please bring snacks, etc. to the party nights for everyone to enjoy.

301 Club continues to be successful because of your continued support each and every Friday night and for that we are most grateful.

FALL QUARTER 2006
_____________________________________________________

FELLOW DANCERS, the heat and humidity of summer is beginning to fade and cooler temperatures are on the horizon as we head toward the end of another year of dancing and fellowship at “301 Club” which means we are fast approaching “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”. This quarter we will have only ten Friday nights together as we take time off for the holidays. Kelly will be teaching East Coast Swing, Tango, and a review during the months of October, November and December respectively. East Coast Swing is a dance favorite and most of us could use dance instruction in the Tango albeit a beautiful, but difficult dance to master.

SOME OF YOU, especially the ladies, have intensively watched others dancing various line dances and inquired where you could learn these line dances. There are three ladies that regularly are at “301 Club” who teach line dancing. They are Linda Williams, Angela Demrath and Bertha Bonnie. Each one teaches at various locations and times during the week and weekend and I am sure any of these ladies would be glad to get you involved in their classes.

AS WE CLOSE another great year at “301 Club” appreciation is due and deserving to all of you who continue to make “301 Club” a success and to all of our volunteers who graciously give of their time and lastly to Kelly who is dedicated and so conscious of teaching you how to become better dancers.
For many years now the commitment of the membership of Dexter Avenue UMC has meant so much to so many as a safe and Christian atmosphere on Friday nights to enjoy dancing and fellowship with their friends and none of us should let this commitment go not thanked. Pastor Ron Smith and his wife, Annamarie, have enthusiastically embraced the “301 Club” ministry since arriving in June and their support is greatly appreciated. To everyone, may you have a safe, joyous and prosperous “Holiday Season”!

This is a great way for our folks to share messages and post events. Hopefully, we will be able to put our newsletter in this blog as well. Photo, audio and video inserts or links are also planned in the future. So, join in the fun and come dance with us every Friday 6:30-10:30 pm.
